The Interview Process Is the First Impression of Your Company. And Most Companies Are Blowing It

Companies spend enormous energy on employer branding — polished career pages, glossy culture videos, "best places to work" awards. Then a candidate applies, and the actual experience falls apart: a two-week silence after the first interview, a panel that clearly hasn't read the resume, a final round that ends with "we'll be in touch" and never follows up again.
Candidates today are interviewing companies just as much as companies are interviewing them. And the interview process itself — not the career page — is where that impression actually gets made.
The damage is largely invisible, which is exactly what makes it dangerous. A candidate who gets ghosted after a strong final round doesn't usually send an email demanding an explanation. They just quietly withdraw, tell their network what happened, and move on. Multiply that by every candidate who's had a similar experience, and a company can be actively hurting its own hiring outcomes without a single metric flagging why the pipeline feels weaker than it should.
Offer-acceptance rates, referral quality, and even the willingness of former candidates to reapply later are all shaped by how the process felt — not just how the offer looked. Slow communication signals disorganization. A disengaged interviewer signals the role doesn't matter much. Silence after a rejection signals the company doesn't value people's time.
None of this requires a bigger budget to fix. It requires treating every stage of the interview process as a reflection of what it's actually like to work there — because to a candidate, it already is.
If your offer-acceptance rate is dropping or your best candidates keep going quiet, the compensation package might not be the problem. The experience getting there might be.
