Jewish Nonprofit Leadership: Why Representation Matters

Attributed to: Jewish Nonprofit Leadership
Representation across nonprofit organization leadership is crucial in aiding in decision-making and the success of the organization. Additionally, representation within an organization builds trust among stakeholders and across communities.
Being representative of communities is extremely important in nonprofit organizations, however when questioned if their boards were building a diverse and inclusive group committed to equality, 41% of CEOs in a study done by BoardSource rated their boards as failing or below average. Additionally, only about half CEOs believe that their boards represent their communities.
Authentic representation in Jewish nonprofit leadership matters for many reasons, most notably, it fosters trust, inspires the community, and helps affirm the organization's identity.
Trust is foundational to many mission-driven organizations. In today’s evolving workforce, shaped by technological change and shifting expectations, maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders and communities depends on trustworthy, representative staff.
The current Jewish leaders also serve as role models and can inspire the next generation of professionals who seek mentors with shared values and goals. The pipeline of talent and leadership can be strengthened by mentorship of young staff from leaders with similar aspirations.
The effectiveness of any organization lies in the hands of its staff. Leadership teams must be intentional about preserving the mission, values, and identity of the organization. Broad representation across staff ensures that there is a diverse perspective, with many identities and experiences represented, leading to stronger, more effective outcomes.
While the need for representation is clear, there are still significant barriers. For example, there is a large gender gap, while women make up around 70% of employees in this field, less than half of the CEOs roles are held by women. This data highlights possible opportunities for organizations to better leverage the perspective and talent of their experienced employees.
Another challenge lies in leadership development. Many organizations face a lack of succession planning and leadership pipeline development, as potential leaders often do not receive the training and exposure necessary to advance positions. Without intentional investment, talent often stalls or moves elsewhere.
There is no single solution, but there are many meaningful steps organizations can take. It starts with intentional recruitment and board development. Organizations should ask: Who is missing from our leadership? What voices are not being heard? A more inclusive recruitment strategy can help bring new perspectives and talents into the fold.
Internally, nonprofits can commit to developing their existing staff. This includes leadership training and mentorship programs. Leaders should also prioritize listening. Feedback from staff and community members can help identify gaps and opportunities, ensuring that representation is more than a checkbox and it becomes part of the organization’s culture.
Search firms and recruiters working in the nonprofit space also have a powerful role to play. Recruits partner with organizations to understand their cultures and needs to identify ideal candidates. When recruiters prioritize inclusive practices, they help reshape boards and executive teams to be more reflective of the diverse Jewish world.
Representation in Jewish nonprofit leadership is a need for the future of the community. When leadership reflects the people it serves, organizations are more trusted, more effective, and more resilient.
