Reflections on the Stifel Venture Exchange at the New York Stock Exchange

Walking onto the floor of the New York Stock Exchange for the Stifel Venture Exchange last night felt like stepping directly into the center of a living, breathing ecosystem. The energy wasn’t just high—it was connected. Everywhere I turned, someone was sharing a new idea, a challenge they were tackling, or a vision for what’s next. New York’s venture community has always been dynamic, but last night was a reminder of how deeply collaborative it truly is.
What stood out most wasn’t just the impressive roster of founders and investors—it was the way conversations flowed so naturally across disciplines, industries, and perspectives. A founder discussing early-stage hurdles would suddenly find themselves deep in conversation with a banking partner offering structural insight. An investor sharing thoughts on the market would segue into a debate about growth strategy with an experienced operator. These moments felt organic, meaningful, and genuinely supportive, which is exactly what makes this ecosystem thrive.
In the midst of all these rich conversations, Stifel CEO Ron Kruszewski delivered a light-hearted moment with his comment about Indiana being the best football team. Hearing that in a room full of New Yorkers instantly softened the energy and got people laughing together. It reminded everyone that connection isn’t just built through business—it’s built through the small, human moments that make us smile. We’ll save the real football talk for another time, though I think we can all agree it pairs best with dessert.
And speaking of dessert… the cannolis were absolutely unforgettable. Truly. There was a moment when the entire room seemed to pause—not for a keynote, not for a market insight, but because those cannolis were that good. It became an unexpected bonding point: a reminder that even in the most high-powered spaces, shared joy creates connection just as much as shared expertise.
Throughout the evening, I had the chance to speak not only with founders and investors but also with the CPA partners, banking teams, and law firms who quietly power so much of this ecosystem’s success. These groups don’t always get the spotlight, but they form the infrastructure that allows companies to grow responsibly and sustainably. Their insights, paired with the ambition of founders and the guidance of investors, are what make this community feel less like a network and more like an interconnected system built on trust and shared goals.
At Merraine, our role in this ecosystem is centered around people. The conversations last night reinforced just how essential leadership is to every company’s journey. Capital, legal structure, and strategic advisory are all crucial—but without the right leaders, a great idea can only go so far. Being part of these discussions made me even more grateful for the work we do: helping companies build the teams that turn vision into reality.
The Stifel Venture Exchange beautifully showcased what happens when passionate, talented, curious people come together under one roof. It was more than an event—it was a celebration of the relationships, the support systems, and the collective intelligence that make New York’s venture community so extraordinary.
If we connected last night, I truly enjoyed meeting you. And if we didn’t get a chance to talk, I would love to continue the conversation. This ecosystem grows stronger every time we reach out, collaborate, and share ideas.
