Why Merraine’s Work Will Always Be Personal to Me

When I think about Merraine Group, I don’t just think about a company. I think about the people who make it what it is. The leaders we have placed, the clients who have trusted us, the families who depend on the organizations we serve.
I started Merraine because I believed recruiting could be done differently. I wanted to build a firm that cared as much about people as it did about results. One that treated every search as a relationship, not a transaction. More than twenty years later, that belief still guides everything we do.

When Work Became Personal

In 2004, my wife and I welcomed our son, Daniel. He was curious, funny, and full of energy. As he grew, we learned that he had developmental disabilities and later, autism.
That changed my life. It also changed how I saw my work.
Through Daniel, I met extraordinary people: teachers, therapists, and behavior analysts who pour their hearts into helping others reach their potential. Their patience and compassion inspired me. They made me see that the work we do at Merraine isn’t just about jobs. It is about people who make care possible.
That realization led us to expand our work in healthcare and autism services. I wanted Merraine to help build teams that could create the same kind of impact that those professionals had on my family.
For me, this work has never been abstract. Every placement means something. Every search touches a life.

The Power of Partnership

In recent years, I have been lucky to find partners who share that same sense of purpose. Kass and Mike Lazerow joined me in building the next chapter of Merraine and the Joel Paul Group. They bring creativity, energy, and a genuine belief in doing business the right way.
Together we have created something I am deeply proud of. Our team blends experience and innovation, tradition and growth. We may have different backgrounds, but we share the same values: integrity, curiosity, and care for people.

Lessons from Daniel and Life

Daniel is thriving in a program that helps him grow in independence and confidence. Watching him learn has taught me more about leadership than any book or seminar ever could. He reminds me to be patient, to stay grounded, and to celebrate small wins.
Those lessons show up in how I lead. I believe in listening first, in being direct but kind, and in creating an environment where people can bring their best selves to work.
And yes, I love good wine. I love the conversations that happen around a dinner table. The laughter, the stories, the unexpected insights that come when people let their guard down. Some of the best partnerships I have formed started that way. To me, business has always been about connection and trust.

What Still Matters Most

Merraine has grown in ways I could never have imagined when I started it from a small office over two decades ago. We now work with more than 800 healthcare and nonprofit organizations across the country, and we have one of the highest retention rates in our field. But numbers are not what make me proud.
What matters most is the relationships. The sense of purpose. The knowledge that we help organizations find leaders who will make their communities stronger.
Daniel’s story is part of that purpose. My family’s story is too. And so is every person who has walked through this journey with me, including Kass and Mike.
This work will always be personal to me.
If you are growing your healthcare or ABA team, or if you are looking for your next meaningful role, I would love to connect.
