OVERVIEW

The Medical Director provides leadership and oversight for clinical services within the Department of Corrections, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and the highest standards of care. Responsibilities include supervising clinical staff, managing healthcare programs, and developing strategies for preventive health, public health emergencies, and cost-effective care delivery.

WORK SCHEDULE

Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education:Medical degree from a recognized institution.Completed ACGME-approved residency in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Surgery.
  • Experience:Supervisory role in an accredited hospital, institution, or clinic.Experience in correctional medicine or related fields preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification:Unrestricted Rhode Island medical license.DEA and Rhode Island controlled substance registrations.Board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or dual FM/IM-Psychiatry preferred (Board eligible acceptable with certification required within 3 years).Certification as a Correctional Health Professional (CCHP) preferred or willingness to achieve within the first year.
  • Skills:Strong knowledge of internal medicine, infectious diseases, substance use disorders, and correctional healthcare.Leadership, program evaluation, and staff management capabilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all medical, mental health, dental, and clinical services at the Department of Corrections.
  • Supervise physicians, nurses, and clinical staff, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of care.
  • Develop clinical policies and strategies for preventive care and public health emergencies.
  • Collaborate with administrators and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Evaluate programs for quality improvement and cost-effectiveness.
  • Lead public health initiatives and training programs for clinical staff.
